A Guide to ELCA Governing Documents for Congregations

Detailed and step-by-step aid, answering all the questions congregations may have.
Based on the Model Constitution for Congregations.

Your Constitution: A Living Document

In the ELCA, we are blessed to have a Model Constitution. Most other Christian congregations have to develop their own governing documents. These documents are often short, lacking legal guidance, and missing many important items. Our constitutions are built on a strong foundation, filled with unifying language and legal wisdom.

Your constitution and other governing documents are meant to be living documents that can both serve your ministry and protect your congregation. When given the proper attention and care, these documents can be a central tool for maintaining and building your ministry.

Using This Site

This site is here for your benefit, with sections to help you plan your work, understand the basics of ELCA governing documents, use proper style to write good provisions, walk you through the contents of your governing documents, address any unique state concerns, and provide examples of how to customize your constitution. There are even some general thoughts on constitutional matters.

Hope

The Model Constitution for Congregations is a foundation for your congregation. On its own, it can provide the basic structure you need. However, every congregation will need to build on that foundation to meet their individual needs. This site hopes to provide you the tools you need to build on that foundation and make a grand structure that will serve your congregation for years to come.

It is my desire that this site enables congregations to say with confidence:

*PREAMBLE*

We, baptized members of the Church of Christ, responding in faith to the call of the Holy Spirit through the Gospel, desiring to unite together to preach the Word, administer the sacraments, and carry out God’s mission, do hereby adopt this constitution and solemnly pledge ourselves to be governed by its provisions. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
